MonkeySnap is a mobile-first app for sharing everyday moments with friends.
A few good things to know
Private content is encrypted
Direct messages and snaps are encrypted in your browser using account keys stored in your private built-in key-value storage. Files are encrypted before uploading. Usernames, friendships, activity, and delivery metadata are public app records. Public stories are public too. Browser push subscriptions are encrypted before being saved. This is not an audited secure messenger; don’t use it for sensitive information.
24-hour moments
Stories stop appearing after 24 hours. Viewed, unsaved snaps disappear from the app 24 hours after viewing. Saving a snap keeps it in chat. This is app-level expiry, not guaranteed deletion of the uploaded file. Recipients can still take screenshots.
Camera, on your terms
Camera and microphone access are requested only when needed. Lenses run on-device using MediaPipe. Tap to take a photo; hold to record up to 15 seconds. HTTPS and browser media permissions are required.
Feels better installed
On Safari, tap Share then Add to Home Screen. On Chrome, open the menu and tap Install app or Add to Home Screen. iPhone notifications require the installed app.
Stay in the loop
Background push uses your browser’s native push service and the app’s VAPID credentials. Realtime notifications work while MonkeySnap is open. Background alerts additionally require the app owner to configure the VAPID public and private keys. You can switch notifications off in your profile.
Common questions
How do I add a friend?
Open Add Friends, search their name or username, and tap Add. They can accept from the Added Me section.
How do streaks work?
Both friends must send each other a snap on consecutive UTC calendar days. The fire counter counts days with snaps in both directions.
Is this affiliated with Snapchat?
No. MonkeySnap is an independent app inspired by camera-first messaging.
